I’m a Democrat and Here’s Why

I get frustrated in conversations with my friends when they tell me they are a Democrat or Republican, but they can’t tell me why.  Really? You identify yourself with a particular party and you can’t explain why you believe what you believe.

With the elections right around the corner, maybe it would be a good exercise for all of us to re-examine why we say what we are – to take the time to really evaluate why we identify with one party or the other.

I am a Democrat because I believe government has a duty and a role to help those who cannot help themselves.  Many people will immediately point to freeloaders who don’t pay any taxes, don’t have a job and live off of social programs as the people I am defending.  Nothing could be further from the truth.

Truly, government plays an essential role in all of our lives.  Government ensures we have roads and highways to drive our cars on.  Government holds the responsibility to ensure the food we have is safe to eat and is not contaminated with disease or high levels of bacteria.  Government creates and enforces the rules in which we operate our free markets to ensure that there is a somewhat level playing field as we execute our commerce.  Government recruits, maintains and ensures we have a national defense that protects us from those who wish to do us harm………. Really, you could spend hours writing out the roles that government plays that make all of our lives better.

I do not view government as evil.  I believe government is of us and by us, just as the founding fathers did.  We create and put in place the leaders, policies and roles that we want government to play in society.  Unfortunately, there is a movement afoot in the country that demonizes government.  In fact, many of the people who want you to hate government are the life long politicians who created many of the programs they say they hate today.  (Remember the Prescription Drug Benefit in Medicare?)  These are the same people who blame anything the government does on some liberal socialist policy.

It is time we get away from the sound bytes that portray the role government plays as being evil.  Government plays an essential role in all of our lives, keeping us safe, providing us with fair commerce and providing the infrastructure for us to enjoy our lives on a day-to-day basis.

It is not just programs for those who refuse to put forth effort for employment or who are gaming the process.  In fact, government is helping you with things everyday that you can’t do or provide for yourself.  Are you a freeloader?

Or, are you perhaps realizing that you are a Democrat just like me?
